Canada To Take In Refugees as UN Piles Pressure
The United Nations’ migration secretariat says that the crisis rocking Europe needs a “global response” amid a warning from the European Union that the situation could last for years.
This came as the Canadian government declared it is as a result of the UN pressure, preparing to take in asylum seekers only that it would take security caution.
Stephen Harper in a statement indicated government is working to accept the refugee resettlement.
He however said Canada will not airlift thousands of refugees from countries such as Syria and Iraq, where extremist organizations operate, without conducting a proper security screening.
“To help, we must ensure we screen every potential refugee carefully. We have been clear that we are willing to take more people, but we must be sure we are helping the most vulnerable.
“We cannot open the floodgates and airlift tens of thousands of refugees out of a terrorist war zone without proper process. That is too great a risk for Canada,” Harper said on Tuesday during a question-and-answer session on Facebook. (ABC/CBC/Agencies)
